Goals
Brief History
The Tekirdağ Branch was established on September 19, 1991, under the Presidency of Abdullah Güneş. In 1992, the former building of the Village Services, located at Dereağzı district, was remodeled and refurbished, to open our Rehabilitation and Education Center for public service. This Center was the first of its kind to serve the mentally handicapped individuals in Tekirdağ. In June 1997, our Center moved to its new headquarters in the four story building that was specially built on a 4000 m2 land, with state-citizen cooperation and support, and continued giving its much needed special education and rehabilitation services. Along with the dedicated services by our expert staff mambers, the support from Rukiye Güneş and the encouragement she has given to her husband, Secretary of State Abdullah Güneş, have been immense, to make it possible for us to reach our level of achievement today.
Rukiye Güneş currently continues with her leadership as President, following our members’ assuming various responsibilities and positions in our administration, and she goes on achieving more successful results, working with our dedicated volunteer members.
Education
Our building is the most contemporary education center in the region, with its 2200 m2 covered usable area in four stories, to provide for education and training opportunities to our students in ample, clean, and comfortable quarters. On the ground floor of our building, our sports hall, workshop spaces, and physical therapy hall are located. On the second floor, we have our administation rooms, application kitchen, dining hall, individual living skills learning room, waiting hall, and canteen. On the third floor, the education rooms and classes are located. The drama, communications skills learning and listening rooms, and relaxation/music room are on the fourth floor.
Education Staff
Our Education staff consists of the following members:
One Director responsible for Administration,
Two special education experts,
Two child develoment and education experts,
One physical therapist,
One social services expert,
One psychologist,
Two Classroom teachers,
One physical education teacher,
Seven child education and care staff members,
One arts and crafts teacher.
In addition to these staff members, we also have one accountant and four service personnel, to assume auxiliary service responsibilities.
Education Services
Over 100 students receive individual and full day group education according to their handicap types and levels, in our Rehabilitation and Education Center; most of these students are boys.
Individual Education
Individual Education includes all activities and training for our students whose performance levels and their education programs have been previously determined; these are conducted under the control of our experienced staff members who are experts in their fields.
Group Education
Groups are formed by bringing together those children who have similar handicaps and characteristics, with special consideration given to their performances. Individualized education programs are conducted and applied in each group under the close supervision of an expert and an auxiliary teacher.
Physical Therapy
The programs for overcoming the physical deficiencies in individuals which result along with mental handicaps are conducted by our expert physical therapist staff member.
As well as the children, their mothers, fathers, siblings, and those in their close social environments are also given the necessary eudcational information and training in all areas.
Family and Environmental Education
In Special Education, it is a very important principle that the knowledge and skills the children learn at school should continue to be supported in their home environments; only this way, continuity and parallel progress in education at school and at home will be accomplished. Therefore, education of the family and the close social environment receive great attention and care at our Branch.
Reading and Writing Education
The mentally handicapped children, whose developmental levels are appropriate, receive education and training in reading and writing; this is conducted by a teacher who is an ezpert in this area.
Work and Crafts Education
These include the activities designated for our students to specifically support their creativity, improve their handcrafts skills, thereby, help develop confidence and self reliance in our children.
Agricultural education is one of the areas our students enjoy most. The activities that are parts of this program help in developing their hand skills; also, interacting closely with nature and working directly with earth bear positive psychological results in the process of education and learning.
The results of the activities in this area are exhibited each year and proofs of what mentally handicapped individuals are able to achieve are shown to the public. These exhibitions contribute greatly to the education of the general public in the vicinity as well.
Activities
Social Activities
In order to make it possible for our mentally handicapped children to interact with a wider social environment, acquire positive behavioral patterns, and have meaningful lives, we organize such social activities as educational field trips (museums, shopping, markets and bazaars, theater, movies, shopping centers, etc.), picnics, and youth camps. These occupy a significant part of our activity programs.
Sports Activities
To have our mentally handicapped children participate in sports activities, thereby, make it possible for them to develop and strengthen the feelings of belonging to a group, sharing, selfconfidence, and cooperation, and, also, to awaken the sense of enjoyment in these activities, are among our primary objectives.
In addition to sports activities, we also offer the following special courses to support our students’ basic special education:
