Goals
Brief History
The Manisa Branch was founded on December 21, 1988, under the Presidency of Efdal Erdemir, with dedicated contributions from Nuran Pakdemirli, Nevin Dirik, and Müyesser Gürel. The same year, the education and rehabilitation services were started in an apartment as our temporary base. In 1991, the Manisa Branch purchased its land in the Laleli District. Following this purchase, the ‘Build Your Classroom Yourself Campaign’ was started and our school building, of 950 m2 eclosed space, was completed, with contributions from philanthropists and the public, to start its service in 1994.
As education and rehabilitation services were firmly established and were carried on with their high quality level of accomplishment on the one hand, our Manisa Branch continued concentrating on its work on our transition towards building dormitory facilities, on the other hand. Thus, the Manisa Branch was able to experience the pride of becoming the first one of the Branches to start dormitory services, in our Foundation history, and provide the solution for one of the major necessities in the region.
The Branch Executive Board purchased the 4734 m2 land which is adjacent to the existing building, for the purpose of providing for an additional nightly care unit and a work application school, from the Minicipality Administration of Manisa. Our Foundation Branch currently continues with all its efforts which are concentrated on providing healthy and secure environments necessary for the handicapped individuals throughout their lives for the future.

Education Services
Currently we have 85 students who receive education and training at our Manisa Branch. Of these, 20 students use our dormitory services. These dormers are the children of families who live in the towns and villages of the Manisa province and the vicinity of the city and do not have the possibility of daily commute to the Foundation Branch School. Our full day education takes place between 09:30 and 17:00. Every day, we provide for lunch for the day students and breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the dormers.
All the expenses of the Manisa Branch are met by the education payments from the Social Security Organizations for the students who have social security through their families and by financial donations or donations in kind that are sent to our Branch.
The Service Areas and their Applications
In the Education and Rehabilitation Center of the Manisa Branch of the Foundation for the Training and Protection of Mentally Handicapped Children, we offer education/training and rehabilitation for individuals who have problems and handicaps in such areas as Down Syndrome, Autism, Mental Retardation, Hyperactivity and Attention Deficiency, Cerebral Palsy (Spasticity), Behavioral Problems, and Learning Difficulties. These services are carried on by our staff members who are specialists in these areas. In addition to these, they also conduct the special education and rehabilitation work in physical, communications, self care and hygiene, social, and language development areas, offered to our students.
Education and training occur in special education rooms, conducted by the psychologist, social services expert, child development expert, classroom teacher, and the physical therapist, in sessions or individually. These experts also contact the families to provide for their cooperation so that they can receive home support, according to the special education and training given to the children. Our social services experts and the psychologists also work in such areas as facilitating the attendance of the families to the Family Education Programs, providing support in psycho-social areas, and they work on family counseling.
Other than individual education in special sessions, full day education is given to children who show different developmental levels, grouped according to their special levels, by Child Education experts. These education sessions offered to specail groups are prepared and monitored by the psychologist, the social service expert, the child development expert, the classroom teacher, and the physical therapist who are staff members. The same staff group also prepares and applies the group education in sessions.
The physical education teachers are responsible for teaching all the unit groups, to provide for the necessary support for the physical and bodily development of the children.
On special days, we organize various activities in our institution. In addition, picnics and field trips are organized to strengthen the communication between the school and the families, to have our students learn about their social and physical environments, and to facilitate their adaptation.
Along with such activities as mentioned above, our students attend handcrafts classes and galoshes/overshoes making workshops, following such macro-purposes as having them employed within the workforce, as well as the micro, short-term purposes of teaching them adaptation into the work environment, taking responsibility and follow-through, and self confidence. In these fields, the handcrafts and professional education teachers organize the various courses we currently offer.
In all these education/training activities, we follow such documents as the Portage Early Education Guide, Special Education Program for the Mentally Handicapped Pupils, Skills Analysis Form, Individual Evaluation Form, and Value Dependent Evaluation Tools, to scientifically follow the progress of the development in our students.
EU (European Union) Supported Work Force Market Strategies Project
Along with all the education areas realized in our Branch, we also offer classes and activities defined by the project of preparing mentally handicapped individuals for professions and providing help for their adaptation to life within the society; this project was prepared by psychologist Saadet Karcı, who is our Director responsible for this institution. The project is financed by EU and supported by İŞ –KUR (Work Organization). It was accepted in 2004 by EU and started on August 01, 2004. 24 students over the age of 14 attended these classes which were planned and offered within the boundaries determined by the project. All of these 14 students continue with their education and training at our Manisa Branch.
With this project, as described above, we aim at having our handicapped children develop their individual talents and abilities, along with the necessary knowledge, skills, behavioral accomplishment, and adaptation training needed in the work environment. Thereby, our objectives are to prepare them for independent living and help them acquire a work skill or profession, that will provide for their own happiness, as well as their families’ and their social environment’s content.
Within the boundaries of AİPP (The Active Work Force Market Strategies) Project, two separate workshops have been specially prepared in the our Branch building. These are designated as handcrafts and galoshes/overshoes producing workshops. In these workshops, the handicapped individuals are taught wood painting, stainedglass, candle making, batique, ceramics, fimo and making galoshes, and they gain the necessary skills to be able to work in these areas. In addition to the handcrafts classes offered, we also organize two half-day sessions in a week on psychological support education and social adaptation support education. All of this work on skills acquisition and psycho-social support for adaptation continue for the duration of eight months, during the school year.
