The Education Programs Conducted at the Rehabilitation Center

Early Childhood Education Program

tavuklucocuk.jpg

Mentally handicapped children up to 8 years old take part in this program. The primary aim of the program is to maximize and reinforce the learning and development of each child within their own constraints and special conditions. Sensory exploration, development of expressive abilities, and active participation are important aspects of these education programs. The programs aim at developing language, mental, and psycho-motor abilities in these children. In this period, we encourage the mentally handicapped children –to the extend facilities are made available– to take part in regular pre-school programs together with other children with normal mental development.

Self-Care Education Program

Mentally handicapped children 8-16 years old take part in this program. The primary focus of this program is that the students develop skills in language understanding and use, gain self-care abilities (such as dressing, undressing, toilet use, body cleaning and care, etc.), improve their psycho-motor skills, and close the gap with their age group in the development of analytic skills as well as become self-sufficient individuals in daily life.

Academic Skills Education Program

Mentally handicapped children 12-18 years old take part in this program. The primary focus of the program is to enable the students to read and write, understand and communicate the written material as well as gain academic skills in mathematics, native language rules and use, concepts, and hand craft. Through these skills, the program aims at individuals who are self-sufficient in daily life and activities.

Professional and Occupational Terapy Programs

Mentally handicapped young adults 20+ years old take part in this program. The primary focus of this program is to teach students professional and occupational skills along with life skills. The program provides skills to young adults in areas such as sewing, stitching, jewellery making, silk screen painting, wood, glass, and fabric painting, pottery making, woodworking, working with excess materials, and other handcrafts.

Everyday Life Skills Program (Life Home)

Mentally handicapped young adults 21+ years old take part in this program. The main focus is to teach the mentally handicapped the basic communication and independent life skills that are needed in everyday life in order to become self-sufficient individuals. The program considers a wide spectrum of skills to be part of its focus. These include self-care skills, basic housework, shopping, cooking, and leisure activities as well as skills such as visiting and using public areas and facilities and traveling independently.

Social, Cultural, and Artistic Activities in our Education Program

Our foundation fully appreciates the fact that art education and the development of artistic abilities play a crucially positive role in all areas of a person’s overall development. Knowing that art education further fosters positive attitude in our students as well as significantly improves the development of self-expressive abilities, we actively incorporate painting, music, dance, drama, and folkloric studies into the education of our mentally handicapped students.

Each branch of our foundation has a combination of choirs, folkloric dance groups, drama, and performance groups composed of mentally handicapped students attending the rehabilitation centers. Further, we actively try to integrate our students to all facets of social life by taking them periodically to regular drama and theatre performances as well as cinemas and concerts. We also make our students participate into alternative camps specifically organized and designed for mentally handicapped individuals, similar youth camps and special outdoor festivals, usually under the supervision of specialized educators. We actively support all such activities that would serve to create the self-confidence and the foundations of a self-sufficient life, independent of the families.

In short, the ultimate aim in all of our education and rehabilitation programs is to train and prepare mentally handicapped individuals physically and psychologically to the maximum extend possible in order integrate them with the society as adapted, functional, and productive individuals, living in harmony with other members of society.
